| Bio: | I am the niece and copyright holder of the poet/translator Robert Friend, who died in Jerusalem in 1998. In Israel, Friend was well known as an English language poet and translator of many Hebrew poets, including Ra'hel, Leah Goldberg, Gabriel Preil, and Yehuda Amichai. Since Friend left his native U.S. to live in Israel in 1950, his work is little known here, but I have been working hard to bring his poetry before North American audiences. In 2003, Spuyten Duyvil Press (NY) and Menard Press (London) copublished Friend's DANCING WITH A TIGER: POEMS 1941-1998, Edited by Edward Field. In addition, Friend was openly gay in both his writing and his life at a time when most writers were still in the closet, before Stonewall.
